In selecting the images for the nation’s official gold bullion coin, the United States Mint opted for the most iconic figures possible. Lady Liberty, symbol of freedom and democracy, was chosen for the obverse. The American bald eagle, defender of freedom and a symbol of majesty, was selected for the reverse. The 2017 ¼ oz American Gold Eagle Coin is available now from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ 1907 design of Lady Liberty was chosen in 1986 to represent the nation on the American Gold Eagle coin. Saint-Gaudens was a renowned artist and sculptor who was chosen personally by President Theodore Roosevelt to help redesign all of the nation’s gold and silver currency.
Saint-Gaudens’ design was featured on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933, and was the first coin redesigned in an effort by the government and the US Mint that stretched from 1905 to 1921. His Lady Liberty depiction is widely heralded as the single greatest design in American coinage history.
On the obverse of each 2017 ¼ oz American Gold Eagle coin is the image of Lady Liberty, surrounded by 50 stars with images of Washington DC visible at her feet. Her body is silhouetted by the rays of the rising sun in the background. Augustus Saint-Gaudens created this design originally in 1907 for use on the $20 Gold Double Eagle.
The reverse image is exclusive to the American Gold Eagle, and was created in 1986 by Miley Busiek. Her design features a family of nesting bald eagles, and is accompanied by engravings that include the coin’s face value, weight, and metal content.
All 2017 ¼ oz American Gold Eagle coins listed here are near-perfect specimens according to the PCGS. Coins with a Mint State 69 grade have full, original mint luster but also possess a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. Those flaws are limited to miniscule hairlines and contact marks, and found only outside of the primary focal areas of the coin.
First Strike coins are those received by the PCGS or an approved third-party depository within the original 30 days following the release of 2017 American Gold Eagle coins by the United States Mint.
