In order to create true demand for a coin, mints will improve the fineness of the individual products and unveil new designs that create limited-issue appeal for each new release. The Somalia Elephant coins are a perfect example of this, combining .9999 fineness with a new obverse design annually to drive demand. The 2017 1/25 oz Somalia Gold Elephant Coin is available now from JM Bullion as a BU specimen.
Coin Highlights:
Each 2017 1/25 oz Somalia Gold Elephant Coin offered here today is a Brilliant Uncirculated specimen. Coins in this condition have no signs of wear and tear, but you may notice a range of minor flaws. These vary from breaks in the luster and spotted surfaces to contact marks picked up during the coining process.
Somalia Elephant Series coins originated from the Bavarian State Mint in 1999 as the Zambian Elephant. After the 2003 issue of the coins, the mint shifted the nation of issue to Somalia. Since that time, the program has grown in popularity.
For 2017, the Bavarian State Mint is further expanding the program. The silver versions of the coin now have eight different weights, rather than just 1 oz and 1 Kilo coins. There are three new fractional weights (first time ever) and a 2 oz, 5 oz, and 10 oz coin for the first time, as well. The Somalia Gold Elephants have new ¼ oz and ½ oz options.
On the obverse of the 2017 1/25 oz Somalia Gold Elephant Coin you’ll find the image of an elephant standing on the open plains of the African continent. The African elephant is the largest and heaviest land mammal in the world, and has been pushed to the brink of extinction by poachers looking to benefit financially from the illegal trade of ivory.
The reverse of all 2017 Somalia Gold Elephant coins features the Somali coat of arms. Similar to its national flag, you’ll find a solitary star in the center of the heraldic shield, with the addition of horizontal lines in the background.
All Somalia Gold Elephant coins are struck by the Bavarian State Mint. Opened in Munich in 1158, today it is one of Germany’s four major mints and is owned by the Free State of Bavaria.
