Most children in Canada probably learn to skate before they’ve mastered walking, running, and full command of the English language. For many Canadian parents, that’s probably a point of pride in a nation that takes hockey very seriously. The Royal Canadian Mint’s 7-coin Passion to Play series highlights each of the NHL franchises located in the country. Right now, the 2017 ½ oz Proof Canadian Silver Passion to Play Winnipeg Jets Coin is available via JM Bullion.

The modern incarnation of the Winnipeg Jets is actually a franchise that was founded in 1999 as an expansion team in Atlanta, Georgia. Originally the Atlanta Thrashers, this new Winnipeg Jets franchise played there until the 2010-2011 season, before moving to Winnipeg.
However, from 1972 to 1996, the Winnipeg Jets existed in the city as an NHL franchise. Prior to the 1996-1997 NHL season, the team was moved to Arizona and became the Phoenix Coyotes (now Arizona Coyotes). That franchise was not allowed, however, to retain the Jets name, which was reestablished with the Atlanta Thrashers franchise that moved to Winnipeg in 2011.
On the reverse of the 2017 ½ oz Proof Canadian Silver Passion to Play Winnipeg Jets coin you’ll find the scene of children playing hockey on an outdoor ice rink at night, with a single flood light for brightness.
The obverse of all Passion to Play coins features the commonly used portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s portrait was created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt, and now features on all Canadian coinage.
Your 2017 ½ oz Proof Canadian Silver Passion to Play Winnipeg Jets coin ships from the Royal Canadian Mint in a maroon clamshell and arrives inside of a graphic beauty box that includes full-color artwork found on the reverse of the coin.
All coins in the Passion to Play Series are produced under license with the NHL. The NHL and NHL Shield are registered trademarks of the National Hockey League, and the NHL and NHL team marks are property of the league and its teams.
