American Gold Eagle coins are struck in three different versions each year. The bullion coin is the official coin of the US, while the proof coin is the primary collectible version of the American Gold Eagle collection. Since 2006, the low-mintage burnished coins are struck as a high-value collectible coin as well.
The 2017 ½ oz American Gold Eagle Coins available in this JM Bullion listing have a near-perfect grade from the PCGS. Coins in MS69 condition exhibit full, original mint luster, but also include a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. These minor flaws are limited in scope to miniscule hairlines and contact marks, and in range to the areas outside the primary focal region of the coin’s surface.
First Strike coins, as designated by the PCGS, are those released within the first 30 days of the issue date for 2017 American Gold Eagles set by the United States Mint. The coins must arrive at the PCGS or an approved third-party depository within this window in order to qualify.
The obverse of the 2017 ½ oz American Gold Eagle coin is the image of Liberty created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This design featured Liberty in full-figure relief as she guides the nation forward with her torch. Saint-Gaudens’s design originally appeared on the $20 Gold Double Eagle coin from 1907 to 1933.
On the reverse of the 2017 ½ oz American Gold Eagle is the image of the American bald eagle. In this design, there is a nest with a group of hatchlings under the watchful eye of a female bald eagle. A male bald eagle is shown flying overhead. This design is exclusive to the American Gold Eagle series and was created by Miley Busiek exclusively for these coins.
