Chiwoo Cheonwang was an ancient military leader who earned the mythical title as “God of War” because of his ability to cast magical spells during battle and control the weather to the benefit of his forces. Today, he lives on as a symbol of the Red Devils, the rabid fan group of the South Korean National Soccer Team.
The obverse of the 2017 1/10 oz South Korean Chiwoo Cheonwang Gold Medallion features the image of his shield. Chiwoo’s shield bears a depiction upon its surface of his own imposing mask worn during battle. Engravings include the nation of issue, KOMSCO mark, a latent security image that includes the purity of the gold within its circle, and the weight and metal content.
On the reverse of the 2017 Chiwoo Cheonwang Gold Medallions you’ll find the image of the mythical God of War himself. Altered from the debut 2016 issue, this figure shows Chiwoo astride his powerful warhorse, shield in his left hand and a long spear in his right hand.
KOMSCO is the shorthand name for the Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation, the official government-owned entity responsible for the production of banknotes, circulation currency, and other government documents in South Korea.
