American Gold Eagle coins were first introduced in 1986 by the United States Mint, making 2016 the 30th anniversary celebration for the nation’s official bullion coin. When the American Gold Eagle bullion coin debuted in 1986, the 1 oz weight was the most popular in terms of demand and mintage numbers. In the early years of production, the 1 oz coin was minted at levels double or even triple that of the other fractional-weight coins.
However, in the past five years the 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle has proven exceptionally popular. As of 2014, its mintage numbers exceeded the 1 oz weight. The 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle owes its popularity to its smaller size and more affordable price that results from that lower weight.
On the obverse face of all American Gold Eagle coins is Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ 1907 depiction of Lady Liberty. The image first appeared on the $20 Gold Double Eagle that same year, and was so popular that the coin is now referred to simply as the $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle.
The reverse features a unique depiction created just for the American Gold Eagle. Sculptor Miley Busiek created an image that features a male bald eagle returning to the nest, where a group of hatchlings is closely guarded by a female.
Each of the 2016 1/10 oz American Gold Eagles listed here today is a perfect specimen according to the NGC. Coins with an MS70 grade have full, original luster and lack any detracting flaws. Early Release is a designation reserved for coins that ship within a given timeframe. In order to qualify, these 2017 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle coins must have arrived at the NGC for certification within 30 days of the US Mint 2017 issue date for these coins.
