In 2006, the United States Mint issued the burnished coin as part of the 20th anniversary of the American Eagle program. Available in both the gold and silver versions of the coin, mintage levels for these coins have been significantly lower than the bullion version each year, and in most cases lower than the proof as well. 2016 issue coins are not just the 30th anniversary of the American Eagle program, but also the 10th anniversary celebration of the Burnished American Silver Eagles.
Each Burnished American Silver Eagle coin is given special treatment to ensure its stunning finish after coining. The blanks are first treated in drum that swirls them with a mixture to burnish the surface. Each blank is then hand loaded into the coining press one at a time by individuals wearing gloves to avoid human skin oils from tarnishing the finish. As each coin is struck, it is removed by gloved hands, as well.
The 2016-W Burnished American Silver Eagle coins in this JM Bullion listing features a “W” mint mark, and ship to you inside of a presentation box. Each coin sits in a plastic capsule in its display space within the box, and a US Mint Certificate of Authenticity is included.
On the obverse side of the American Silver Eagle coin is Adolph A. Weinman’s depiction of Lady Liberty. Wearing the American flag around her shoulders, Liberty strides toward the setting sun as a representation of America’s march toward a brighter future.
The reverse side of the 2016-W Burnished American Silver Eagle coin bears John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle design, created in 1986 by Mercanti who was then the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, along with the coin’s weight, metal content, purity, and face value.
