The original Walking Liberty Half Dollar Coin debuted in 1916 and was released annually until 1947. In 1915, the brand-new mint director Robert W. Woolley was under the assumption he had to change the design every 25 years, with 1916 marking that change. He thus had the Commission of Fine Arts conduct a competition to replace the Barber coinage with Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty winning the competition.
