The Proof American Gold Eagle was issued the first year the bullion coins were in 1986, but the fractional weight coins in the Gold Eagle series were not issued right away. These 1/2 oz coins were issued first in 1987, followed by the 1/4 and 1/10 oz weights in 1988.
As the US Mint celebrates the 30th anniversary of the coins, it is prepared to offer the proof and burnished versions with unique changes. The reeded edge used every year on the coins will not be used on the proof and burnished versions, which will instead feature smooth edges with celebratory lettering.
Each 2016 1/2 oz Proof American Gold Eagle in this listing earned a PR70 grade from the PCGS. Coins of this type exhibit full, original mint luster and feature no detracting flaws of any kind. Additionally, the DCAM finish on these coins indicates a product with strong, frosted matte features on the design set and a deeply-mirrored, clear background field.
First Strike coins must pass certain requirements from the PCGS in order to earn that designation. These coins had to arrive at a PCGS or PCGS-approved depository within the first 24 hours of the release date set by the US Mint.
On the obverse is the image of Liberty that was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and originally featured on the brilliant $20 Gold Double Eagle until 1933. The reverse features the family of bald eagles created in 1986 by Miley Busiek, and featured exclusively on the American Gold Eagle series of coins.
