To celebrate the 100th Anniversary of some of the United States Mint’s greatest coin designs ever, the mint will release a total of three commemorative gold coins in 2016 that first appeared in 1916. The first of these is the Mercury Dime, and right now the 2016 1/10 oz American Gold Mercury Dime Coin is available in perfect condition from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Adolph A. Weinman is widely regarded as one of the finest American coin designers of all time. One of a handful of artists who contributed to the Golden Age of American coinage in the early 20th century, Weinman is often remembered for his iconic Walking Liberty design.
While Walking Liberty also debuted in 1916, his Winged Liberty design depicted on this 2016 1/10 oz American Gold Mercury Dime Coin is also wildly popular. The original design of Liberty depicted her beauty in left-profile relief wearing a winged cap. Known officially as Winged Liberty, it was often referred to as the Mercury Dime upon its release because Liberty’s cap reminded Americans of the Roman god Mercury and his winged cap.
On the obverse face of the coin you’ll find the original Winged Liberty design from Weinman, along with his “AW” initials in an interlocking image. The reverse face of the coin includes the original Mercury Dime imagery, which includes a Roman fasces wrapped in an olive branch.
The 2016 1/10 oz American Gold Mercury Dime Coin in this listing is a perfect specimen, with an SP70 grade from the PCGS. Coins of this type have full, original mint luster and lack any detracting flaws. The First Strike designation identifies these coins are products that arrived at the PCGS for grading within the first 30 days of the US Mint’s release date.
