The United States Mint plans to release a total of three 2016 Gold Commemorative coins throughout the year. Each coin will celebrate the 100th anniversary of some of the most iconic American coin designs from the golden age of American coinage history.
Adolph A. Weinman’s Mercury Dime is the first to receive the honor. These coins feature his original obverse and reverse designs, with each coin’s Troy ounce weight mimicking the original coin’s face value, and including 24-karat gold. In this case, the Mercury Dime commemorative coin feature 1/10 troy oz of gold and a $.10 (USD) face value.
Each 2016-W 1/10 oz American Gold Mercury Dime Coin in this listing has a near-perfect grade from the PCGS. Coins with an SP69 grade exhibit full, original mint luster, as well as a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. The First Strike designation is reserved for coins received for certification by the PCGS within the first 30 days of the release date set by the US Mint.
On the obverse face of the coin is Weinman’s original Winged Liberty. The coin took on the name Mercury Dime because Liberty’s winged cap remained many of the Roman god Mercury’s image. An engraving of his initials, an interlocking “AW,” are featured on this face.
The reverse includes his original design of the Roman fasces entwined in an olive branch. The symbol was representative of unity and strength (fasces), as well as a desire for peace (olive branch). The Original engravings from the Mercury Dime are recreated on this side as well.
Each of these 2016 1/10 oz American Gold Mercury Dime coins ships with a 100th Anniversary Label from the PCGS, and the total mintage of 125,000 is bound to sell out quickly. Please contact JM Bullion today with questions at 800-276-6508, chat with us online, or email us.
“Loved the coin as it looks just like a dime. its .9999 gold and even though its 10 cents, its 1/10 oz of gold. I have a 500% microscope used for coins and even at ms69, i couldn’t find a single mark on it. Just a 70 to me. There are two more coins coming out and i’ll be getting those too. The packaging is like the little bag of peanuts on a plane. It takes awhile to open it as they well pack it.”
