The United States Mint is celebrating a number of milestones in 2016, and none is more exciting than the 100th anniversary of some of the nation’s most popular historic designs. 1916 marked a big year in the journey to rejuvenate American coinage in the early 20th century, and those designs now return on the 2016 Gold Centennial Commemorative Coin series. The first is the 2016 1/10 oz American Gold Mercury Dime Coin is available as a perfect specimen from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Adolph A. Weinman played a major role in America’s coin redesign campaign of the early 20th century. The Winged Liberty design replaced former US Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber’s 1892 dime design, but was often referred to as the Mercury Dime. It is known as the Mercury Dime for its similarity to the appearance of the Roman god Mercury, the messenger of the gods.
These 2016 1/10 oz American Gold Mercury Dime coins are the first of three planned releases celebrating 1916 designs. Following Weinman’s Mercury Dime, you’ll later find recreations in 24-karat gold of Weinman’s Walking Liberty Half Dollar and Atkins MacNeil’s Standing Liberty Quarter.
Each coin here has a Specimen Proof 70 grade from the NGC. These coins have a perfect, proof-like finish with no detracting flaws. Coins with an Early Release designation had to arrive at the NGC within the first 30 days of release, as set by the US Mint.
On the obverse of the coin is Weinman’s original left-profile portrait of Liberty wearing the winged cap. The reverse bears the Roman fasces, which represents strength and unity, wrapped in an olive branch representative of peace.
There will be a total mintage of 125,000 coins for each of the 2016 Gold Centennial Commemorative coins, and these particular specimens arrive with 100th anniversary labels inside the plastic slab.
