DCAM, or deep-cameo, coins have a uniquely beautiful finish. The design sets of the coin feature strong, frosted matte visual aspects, while the background field is deeply-mirrored and clear. These contrasting aspects give the design the appearance of floating above the coin’s surface.
The 2016 Proof Silver Eagle marks the 30th anniversary of the coin program. For this year's proof release, the US Mint is using its first-ever edge lettering in the series to mark the date with a special text.
On the obverse of all American Silver Eagle coins you'll find the image of Walking Liberty. Created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman, it depicts Lady Liberty as she strides toward the setting sun as a symbol of the nation's march toward a brighter future.
The reverse of the 2016 Proof American Silver Eagle coin bears the heraldic eagle of the United States. This design has been used in various iterations since 1794 on American coinage. This particular version was refined in 1986 by former US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti specifically for release on American Silver Eagle coins.
Proof American Silver Eagle coins are produced by the United States Mint at its West Point Mint facility, which is indicated by the presence of a “W” mint mark on the coin’s reverse field by the eagle’s nest.
