American Silver Eagle coins were introduced by the United States Mint in 1986, but the design on the reverse has a much deeper history than 30 years. Walking Liberty first appeared on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar coin in 1916, and celebrates its own milestone this year with its centennial.
Each 2016 Proof American Silver Eagle coin available to you today is a PR69 coin according to the NGC. Coins in this condition still have full, original mint luster, but also feature a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. These flaws are limited to miniscule hairlines or contact marks and are located outside the primary focal areas of the coin.
As an Early Release coin, these products were received by the NGC for certification within the first 30 days of the release date as set by the United States Mint.
On the obverse of each 2016 Proof American Silver Eagle coin you’ll find the image of Walking Liberty. Her depiction is meant to symbolize the nation’s march toward a brighter future and is captured through her appearance with the American flag over her shoulder as she walks toward the setting sun.
The reverse of the 2016 American Silver Eagle bears the heraldic eagle of the United States. This image has been in use on American coinage since 1794, but this particular design is a 1986 modernization from John Mercanti, Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1986 to 2010.
All American Silver Eagle coins are struck by the United States Mint. The West Point Mint produces the Proof American Silver Eagle, as indicated by the presence of a “W” mint mark on proof coins.
