There are approximately 280,000 acres of federally managed land within the Shawnee National Forest. It is the largest publicly owned body of land in the state of Illinois and covers a total of nine counties throughout the state. The initial additions of exhausted farmland in the park included work by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and 1940s planting pine trees to help prevent further erosion and rebuild the soil from the exhausted farms.

This left-profile portrait was created in 1932 by John Flanagan for use on the US circulation quarter in honor of Washington’s 200^th birthday. It was modernized and refined for use on the ATB Series as the common obverse.
