The Royal Canadian Mint is known to reuse popular images in the design of its precious metal coins. One can look no further than the Canadian Maple Leaf program, which has featured the same sugar maple leaf design since 1979 in gold, or 1988 in silver. The timberwolf is a popular recurring image on Canadian coins, and now JM Bullion offers the latest entry with the 2016 Canadian Silver Wolf Fractional Coin Set.
Coin Highlights:
- Total mintage of just 7,500 sets!
- Arrives in a wooden display box courtesy of the Royal Canadian Mint.
- Includes a total of four individual proof coins.
- Coins have legal-tender face values backed by the Canadian government.
- Reverse image on all coins designed by Pierre Leduc.
Wolves are one of the most fearsome predators in North America. An individual wolf possesses power in its own right, but these massive canines hunt in packs capable of taking down animals much larger than one individual creature.
The Royal Canadian Mint’s four-coin set includes the 1 oz weight design and three fractional-weight coins. Each coin bears the same obverse and reverse designs, but the face value varies from one coin to the next. The set includes a 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz coin, with descending face values of $5, $4, $3, and $2, all in CAD.
On the reverse of each is the right-profile depiction of a wolf. Its powerful body is kept warm during Canadian winters by its full, fluffy coat. Engravings on this face of the coin include “Canada 2016” along the top, “9999 Fine Silver 1 oz. Argent Pur 9999” along the bottom, and the initials “PL” in honor of Leduc.
The obverse features the familiar right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. England’s longest serving monarch appears on all Canadian currency, and the current design set comes from Susanna Blunt.
The Royal Canadian Mint is one of the most respected facilities in the world, and its designs are coveted by investors and collectors from all corners of the globe. Founded in 1908, it operates facilities in the federal capital of Ottawa and the city of Winnipeg.
