Capture the past as it comes to life on these exciting new 2016 Canadian Day of the Dinosaurs: Spiked Lizard Coins, available today from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The Royal Canadian Mint has released a number of dinosaur designs, and this one depicts the Spiked Lizard as it would have been found in its natural environment millions of years ago. The background of this coin has the sub-tropical environment that once dominated the region that is present-day Alberta.
Julius Csotonyi’s Spiked Lizard design on this coin is not a figment of the designer’s imagination. Instead, paleontologists at the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology has verified that Csotonyi’s design of the Styracosaurus is accurate.
On the reverse side of the coin is Csotonyi’s design of the Spiked Lizard as it makes its way through a sub-tropical forest. The creature’s massive frame is finished in a brilliant color that brings it to life. Engravings on this side include the nation of issue, year of issue, and the face value of the coin.
The obverse features Queen Elizabeth II’s right-profile portrait. Created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt, it is the standard image of Her Majesty used on all Canadian currency. It is featured along with engravings of “Elizabeth II” and “D.G. Regina.”
The Royal Canadian Mint was founded in Ottawa in 1908 to process and refine gold and silver from the Yukon Territories. Facing issues with capacity by the 1970s and having Canadian currency produced by the United States Mint, the RCM expanded with a second facility in Winnipeg.
