In order to earn the First Day of Issue coin, these bullion American Silver Eagle coins had to arrive at the NGC or an NGC-approved depository within the first 24 hours of the release date. Coins must arrive in sealed boxes from the US Mint, and at a maximum can arrive no later than 24 hours after the postmark date on the shipment.

American Silver Eagle coins were authorized with passage of the Liberty Coin Act of 1985 by Congress. The bill provided the Treasury Department and US Mint access to silver stores in the Defense National Stockpile for the purposes of striking an official bullion coin of the nation.

On the obverse is the image of Walking Liberty. Representative of America’s constant march toward a brighter future, Liberty is shown walking toward the setting sun with an American flag draped over her shoulders.

The reverse features the image of the nation’s heraldic eagle. In the design, created by John Mercanti, you see the American bald eagle behind the national shield of the US, with arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other.
