American Silver Eagle coins were introduced by the US Mint in 1986 as the nation’s official silver bullion coin. Unlike the Gold Eagle, which as four weights, the American Silver Eagle is available only in the popular 1 oz weight.
The American Silver Eagle has broken single-year sales records countless times during the last eight years. In fact, it has broken six single-year sales records in the last eight years, including the last two back-to-back. In 2014, 44 million American Silver Eagles were sold. That was followed by up an additional 47 million in 2015.
Each 2016 American Silver Eagle in this product listing has a near-perfect Mint State 69 grade from the NGC. Coins in this condition have full, original luster, but also feature a maximum of two minor detracting flaws.
These coins are particularly rare because they are designated First Day coins by the NGC. In order to earn this designation, the coins had to arrive at the NGC or an approved depository within 24 hours of the release date set by the US Mint, in sealed mint boxes. It was also acceptable for the coins to arrive within 24 hours of the post mark date, assuming it was the official release date.
For 2016, the American Silver Eagle continues the use of Walking Liberty on the obverse and the heraldic eagle on the reverse. For the 30th Anniversary celebration, the US Mint plans a first-ever edge lettering on the proof and burnished versions to commemorate the occasion.
