Mexican Silver Libertad coins are older than both their American and Canadian counterparts, but lack the demand and profile of the latter two. To a large degree this is a result of the Mexican Mint’s choice to strike the coins at very low mintages. Nevertheless, the coins experience good demand each year.
The 5 oz Mexican Silver Libertad Coin was not introduced as an option in the program until 1996, the same time that a 2 oz coin was added to the series. The 5 oz coin experienced strong demand in its first year, but has largely seen mintage figures below 10,000 every year with the exception of 2009 when the Great Recession pushed demand for silver to all-time highs.
Each of the 2016 5 oz Mexican Silver Libertad Coins in this product listing has a Brilliant Uncirculated grade. The BU condition means that each shows no signs of wear and tear, though you may notice breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks.
On the obverse side of the coin is the image of Winged Victory. Her angelic figure features prominently on the Mexican Independence Victory Column in the center of Mexico City. The statue was erected in 1921 in honor of the nation’s centennial independence celebration, which was the same year Winged Victory appeared on the gold Centenario coin for the first time.
The reverse of the 2016 5 oz Mexican Silver Libertad coin features the Mexican coat of arms. There are actually several renditions on the coin, with the modern version in the center surrounded by all 10 historic versions used since 1821.
