In 1996, the Perth Mint released one of the first and most popular lunar-year inspired coin series. Running for 12 years until 2007, the Lunar Series coins were so popular that the Perth Mint immediately released a second series, entitled Lunar Series II.
These 2016 5 oz Australian Silver Monkey Coins are part of the Lunar Series II program, and feature all-new designs from the original coin program. While the original coins had simpler designs, all coins in the Lunar Series II feature brilliantly detailed and impressively finished designs.
The 2016 Australian Silver Monkey coin series includes seven different weights in the bullion version. In addition to these 2016 5 oz Australian Silver Monkey coins, there are coins available in ½ oz, 1 oz, 2 oz, 10 oz, 1 Kilo, and 10 Kilo weights.
On the reverse side of 2016 5 oz Australian Silver Monkey Coins you’ll find the image of two monkeys in a peach tree. The adult monkey is watching as the young monkey holds a peach in the palm of its hand.
The obverse features the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, the image is surrounded by engravings of Her Majesty’s name, the nation of issue, and face value.
Perth Mint was founded in 1898 before Australia filed for federation as a group of six independent states. It remained in British control until 1970 when power over operations was transferred to the state government of Western Australia.
