Theodore Roosevelt was remembered for a lot of deeds as President of the United States, but none more important than the creation of countless National Parks. Roosevelt was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, and was even the last president to carry a firearm on him while serving in office.
The national park in North Dakota that bears his name is unique in that it is not contained within one area, but rather across three separate units. The park totals 70,446 square miles across the South Unit (the largest), the North Unit, and the Roosevelt’s Elkhorn Ranch unit. The one common thread between the sites is the Little Missouri River, which flows through all three areas.
On the obverse side of the coin is the image of America’s first president, George Washington. Created in 1932 by John Flanagan for use on circulation quarters, the image was actually a refinement based upon William Cousins’ 1786 sculpture of Washington.
The reverse side of the 2016 5 oz ATB Theodore Roosevelt National Park Silver Coin features a depiction of a young Roosevelt on horseback as he surveys the land. The Little Missouri is visible snaking through the landscape behind him.
Each America the Beautiful coin is produced by the United States Mint, with bullion and uncirculated versions available. A brand-new coining press was installed at the Philadelphia Mint in 2010 that is capable of striking one million coins each year, and serves as the primary engine behind production of these coins.
