The America the Beautiful coin series enters its 7th year of minting with exciting new designs coming, and the first of those in 2016 is the Shawnee National Forest coin. Representative of the state of Illinois, this brilliant new coin is now available from the United States Mint. Right now, the 2016 5 oz ATB Shawnee National Forest Silver Coin is available from JM Bullion with NGC certification.
Coin Highlights:
Shawnee National Forest is one of the many land reclamation projects that took place during the administration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. His Civilian Conservation Corps Program saw residents of Illinois contribute to the planting of thousands of trees in southeastern Illinois to reclaim land that, at the time, was little more than exhausted farm land.
Each 2016 5 oz ATB Shawnee National Forest coin in this product listing earned a near-perfect certification from the NGC. Coins in MS69 condition exhibit full, original mint luster, but also feature a maximum of two minor detracting flaws.
The PL designation given to these coins indicates a finish that reflects proof striking, even though these products are bullion coins. Proof-like finishes can include matte design sets and/or mirrored background fields.
On the reverse is the image of an eagle flying over the famed camel-rock formation in Shawnee National Forest, and includes engravings of the park, state of issue, and year of issue for the coin.
The obverse includes the left-profile portrait of President George Washington commonly found on the nation’s circulation quarters. Additional engravings include “United States of America,” “In God We Trust,” and the coin’s face value.
