Coin Highlights:
Fort Moultrie is part of a complex of defensive structures that were built to protect Charleston, South Carolina, from British forces during the American Revolution. The original fort was made from palmetto logs, a common tree species throughout South Carolina.
During the Battle of Sullivan’s Island as the British made their first attempt to take Charleston, the strength of the palmetto, the position of Fort Moultrie, and the bravery of the American militia forces shone through. In particular, the flexibility of the palmetto logs used in the construction of Fort Moultrie confounded the British. Cannonball barrages from the Royal Navy proved ineffective as the rounds bounced off the walls of the fort.
President George Washington is featured on the obverse of 2016 5 oz ATB Fort Moultrie Silver Coins. This depiction of Washington is a left-profile relief that was created in 1932 by John Flanagan. The design was created in 1932 for the US quarter to mark the bicentennial of Washington’s birth.
William Jasper of the South Carolina militia is featured on the reverse side of 2016 ATB Fort Moultrie Silver Coins. Jasper and the South Carolina forces bravely defended the fort from the British onslaught. When the regimental colors were knocked down by cannon fire during the battle, Jasper ran through the fire to get the regimental colors and raise them above the ramparts again.
These 2016 5 oz ATB Fort Moultrie Silver Coins are near-perfect specimens according to the PCGS. Mint State 69 coins showcase full, original mint luster with no more than two detracting flaws present. Acceptable flaws on these coins include only minuscule contact marks or hairlines. These DMPL coins have deeply-mirrored, proof-like visuals
