Carved out from the Appalachian landscape by eons of wind and water erosion, the Cumberland Gap became a famous portal to the West during historical times. It’s noted for its lush environment and natural beauty to this day, rich in wildlife that includes the black bear and the white-tailed deer.
JM Bullion offers these coins in protective slabs from the PCGS. Mint State 69 coins showcase full, original mint luster and a maximum of two minor detractions. Acceptable flaws at this level include minuscule contact marks or hairlines found outside the primary focal points of the coin. DMPL stands for deeply-mirrored, proof-like.
The obverse side of the coin carries the famous profile portrait of George Washington designed by John Flanagan in 1932. It has been featured on American quarters for over eight decades. It bears the inscriptions “United States of America,” “Liberty,” “In God We Trust,” and “Quarter Dollar.”
The coin’s reverse side features an image of a settler looking out on the Cumberland Gap landscape, rendered by U.S. Mint’s prolific Chief Engraver Joseph Menna. The image is accompanied by the words “First Doorway to the West,” and also carries the inscriptions “Cumberland Gap,” “Kentucky,” “2016,” and “E Pluribus Unum.”
