The Mexican Silver Libertad coin is one of the world’s oldest bullion coin programs, and yet one of its least visible. The official silver coin of the nation of Mexico has been available in silver since 1982, but its profile and mintage levels are much lower than competitors such as the Canadian Maple Leaf and American Eagle. Coin Highlights:
Mexican Silver Libertad coins are unique among bullion products in that they lack an assigned face value on the coin. While the vast majority of bullion coins have a face value engraved upon them, though the coins are worth well above that value, the Mexican Mint and Banco de Mexico set a floating face value for the Libertad.
While anyone with a Libertad in hand could theoretically use it for public and private debts, the individual would need to contact the Banco de Mexico to learn the current day’s face value of the coin in order to determine its value in such a scenario.
On the obverse of each 2016 2 oz Mexican Silver Libertad coin is the image of the Mexican Independence Victory Column, along with the volcanic peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl. The volcanoes were named for a pair of ancient Aztec lovers whose story is as tragic as that of Romeo and Juliet.
The reverse side of the coin features the modern Mexican coat of arms in the center, with 10 historic versions of the symbol used since 1821 surrounding the design. The coat of arms features a bald eagle locked in battle with a serpent as it rests on the arm of a cactus.
Banco de Mexico oversees the activities of the Mexican Mint, which is the oldest in the Western Hemisphere. The Mexican Mint was founded in 1535 by Spanish conquistadors.
