With the release of the Lion of England design, the Royal Mint has embarked on an exciting new 10-coin series that expands its offering of bullion coins in both silver and gold. The series will feature new designs commemorating the 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey. The 2016 2 oz British Silver Queen’s Beast Lion coin is more than just one part of the initial launch in the Queen’s Beast Series, it is also the first-ever 2 oz bullion coin from the Royal Mint in silver.
In total, 10 coins will be struck and released by the Royal Mint in the Queen’s Beast Series. Each new designs represents a different creature that was represented in statue form at the Queen’s official coronation in 1953. The Lion of England is the most prominent, holding a special place in the nation’s heraldry.
Each of these 2016 2 oz British Silver Queen’s Beast Lion Coins earned a grade of Mint State 69 from the NGC. Considered near-perfect specimens, these coins exhibit their full, original mint luster, but also feature a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. These are often limited to miniscule hairlines or contact marks, and are all located outside the primary focal areas of the coin.
On the reverse of the coin is the Lion of England design feature. This image depicts the heraldic Lion of England standing on its hind legs with the official shield of Britain in front of it. Wearing a crown atop its head, one paw clutches the shield while the other is poised to strike.
The obverse of the 2016 2 oz British Silver Queen’s Beast Lion Coin includes the newest right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Created by Jody Clark in July 2015, this design come from the youngest artist in Royal Mint history to create Her Majesty’s effigy, and depicts the Queen at age 89.
