Although not often talked about in Western history books or mythology courses taught in schools and universities, Germanic and Norse mythology played a role in shaping European culture long after Roman and Greek mythology disappeared from the popular consciousness. Commonly associated more with Norse mythology, Odin is shared by the Germanic mythology culture as well. In Germanic society, he was a widely revered god, while Norse mythology associates him with direct traits such as healing, death, royalty, battle, and knowledge, among other things.
Depictions of Odin are more prominent in Norse mythology, which records Odin as a man with a long beard who wears a cloak and broad hat, and is missing one eye. He is also frequently depicted wielding a spear named Gungnir.
Each 2016 2 oz Australian Norse Gods Odin Silver coin in this listing has an antique finish, which provides warm, subtle accents to the coin’s high-relief striking. High-relief striking is done under immense pressure to create a 3D field on the coin’s surface. The Odin Silver Coin is the first in a planned series of 3 coins, which will later feature his sons Thor and Loki.
On the reverse of the coin is the image of Odin wielding his famous spear, cloaked in his full battle regalia, and riding into the fight on his horse, Sleipnir. His name is engraved in the upper-left field of the design, and the Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark is hidden in his trailing cloak.
The obverse features the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II from Ian Rank-Broadley. Engravings include “Elizabeth II,” “2 Dollars,” “Tuvalu,” “2016,” and “2 oz 999 Silver.”
