Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coins were introduced in 1988 as the nation’s official silver bullion coin. There has been no major change to the maple leaf design on the reverse over the past 28 years, other than to add new security features.
However, starting in 2011 the Royal Canadian Mint launched a Canadian Wildlife Series, one of the first commemorative bullion issue series. Mintage of coins in the Wildlife series was limited each year to 1 million bullion versions. The series launched with a timber wolf privy, and has featured the grizzly, cougar, and moose, among other animals.
On the reverse side of the 2016 1 oz Wolf Privy Canadian Silver Maple Leaf is the image of the iconic sugar maple, which features on the national flag and countless sports logos across the nation. To the bottom-left of the image is a small wolf privy, while additional engravings include “Canada” and the coin’s purity, weight, and metal content.
The obverse face of the coin features the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s effigy was created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt, and first appeared on Canadian currency in 2004. This is the third-generation image of the Queen.
The Royal Canadian Mint was opened for the first time in 1908 to cope with the rush of gold and silver from the discovery of precious metals in the Yukon Territories. Today, the Royal Canadian Mint is a world-renowned facility with coining presses in Winnipeg and Ottawa.
