Late in 2015, the Perth Mint released a series of beautiful, colorized silver coins honoring the 60th anniversary of Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek universe. Now, the Perth Mint is back in the Star Trek mood with the release of a new gold bar. Today, the 2016 1 oz Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Latinum Silver Gold-Plated Silver Bar is available for purchase from JM Bullion.
Bar Highlights:
Deep Space Nine was the third television series to hit the airwaves in America, launching in 1993 and lasting through 1999. It actually ran concurrently with two different series in the Star Trek universe on television. The Next Generation didn’t go off the air until 1993, giving one year of overlap. Voyager debuted just two years after DS9 in 1995, and ran through 2001, meaning the two shows coexisted on television from 1995 to 1999.
In the DS9 storyline, latinum was a silver-colored liquid that was extremely valuable to many civilizations in the Alpha Quadrant. The Ferengi Alliance took particular interest in latinum, pressing the liquid latinum into gold or gold dust to form a usable type of currency.
To honor latinum’s role in the DS9 storyline, the Perth Mint has created a .999 pure silver bar with a gold plating to mimic the appearance of the latinum bars from the show. Each 2016 1 oz Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Latinum Slip has the same gold-pressed latinum slip appearance from the show, including a maker’s mark on the reverse.
Australia’s Perth Mint was founded in 1898 by the Royal Mint, serving as the third and final facility opened in conjunction with the Sydney and Melbourne Mints. After Australia’s federation, the Perth Mint would eventually be the primary mint for the new nation until the formation of the Royal Australian Mint in 1965.
