However, starting in 2004 the coins were issued for the nation of Somalia. This occurred in spite of the fact that no official status exists for the coin. While the Bavarian State Mint insists it did so with authorization from Somalia officials, the head of Somalia’s central bank says otherwise.
What’s most important in 2016 is the increase in silver purity for the Somalia Silver Elephant. Previous years saw the coin minted with .999 pure silver, while the new 2016 1 oz Proof Somalia Silver Elephant High-Relief coin uses .9999 pure silver.
On the obverse face of the coin is the latest design of the African elephant. It features an adult bull elephant standing at the edge of a river, its head tilted back and its trunk up as it bellows out a call. The sun is visible rising in the background, while engravings around the design identify the coin series, the weight, purity, and metal content of the coin.
The reverse features the coat of arms for Somalia, as well as the year of issue, the name “Somali Republic,” and the coin’s face value in Somali Shillings. Each of these coins is struck in high relief, which creates a greater contrast between the design sets and the background field of the coin. This is achieved by striking the silver blanks under immense pressure.
