The Chinese Lunar Calendar associates a different animal with each year of birth following a 10-year cycle. Those born under the sign of the monkey, the ninth animal in the Zodiac, are said to be happy and curious, if not a bit mischievous.
Each of the 2016 1 oz New Zealand Silver Monkey coins available to you today is a perfect specimen according to the NGC. Coins with an MS70 grade have full mint luster and no detracting flaws of any kind.
As part of the Early Release Series, the NGC identifies these coins as among the first to arrive at its depositories. Early Release coins are sealed and shipped by the mint to the NGC within the first 30 days of issue.
On the reverse face of the coin you’ll find the image of a monkey. The face appears to peek around the side of the coin, with only half of it visible. Engravings identify the weight, metal content, and purity of the coin, and include defining characteristics of those born in the Year of the Monkey.
The obverse features the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The longest reigning monarch in British history, Her Majesty’s effigy as seen on this coin is a product of a 1998 portrait from Ian Rank-Broadley.
The New Zealand Mint is a privately owned facility in Auckland, and is the only operating mint in the country. However, it does not have a partnership with the national government, as New Zealand currency is struck at the Royal Canadian Mint or Royal Mint in London.
