Royal Canadian Mint coins are known around the world for purity of content, but also for beauty in design. One of the fixtures often found on RCM coins are the many natural wonders of the Canadian landscape. Each year the mint releases new coin designs, and 2016 is no different. The Iconic Canadian Animals coin series from the Royal Canadian Mint includes eight previous releases. Previous designs in the series include the following animals: polar bear, moose, bighorn sheep, mule deer, elk, and alpha wolf. The Snowy Owl is one of the most dangerous aerial predators in Canada, and is well represented on this beautiful coin.
Each of these 2016 1 oz Canadian Snowy Owl Silver Coins is struck in a proof version and finished with natural tones and hues. The colorized finish brings a new layer of life to the coin design, with a winter landscape visible behind the owl.
On the reverse face of each coin you’ll find the image of an owl sitting atop a rocky ledge, looking off into the distance. Its feathers are a brilliant combination of white and black. The landscape behind it displays the early stages of winter, as the barren trees give way to a snow-covered ground.
The obverse includes Susanna Blunt’s right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s effigy is included along with engravings of “Elizabeth II,” “Canada,” and “D.G. Regina.” The image on the reverse side of the coin was designed by Douglas Liard, the designer behind each of the Iconic Canadian Animal coins.
Each of these coins was produced by the Royal Canadian Mint. Established by the British in 1908 to refine the influx of precious metals from the Yukon Territories, the Royal Canadian Mint now includes two facilities in Winnipeg and Ottawa.
