When people think of Canada, the first thing that often comes to mind is the maple leaf. Featured in the center of their flag, this symbol has been representative of Canada since the early 1700s. Long before any Europeans stepped foot on to Canada’s shores, aboriginal Canadians were making use of the Maple tree for its sap. Thanks to its deep-rooted history in Canada, it makes sense that the Royal Canadian Mint’s most popular coin design is that of the 2016 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf.
Coin Highlights:
Since the coin was first introduced in 1979, the Gold Maple Leaf has not undergone too many design changes. The simple design features the extremely detailed image of a maple leaf on the reverse side. Surrounding the large leaf are purity indications as well as the word “Canada.” The leaf featured on the reverse side of the coin is so intricately designed that even its individual veins and stems are able to be deciphered with the naked eye.
On the coin’s obverse you will find the right-facing profile image of Queen Elizabeth II, as well as the 1 oz coin’s face value (CAD$50). Queen Elizabeth is featured on Canadian money because she is considered to be the Sovereign of Canada’s parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy. Though most were under the impression that Canada cut ties with the UK many years ago, this simply isn’t true.
The Royal Canadian Mint produces these coins every year, and it seems as though the design becomes more crisp and alive with each new release. Produced in RCM’s Ottawa and Winnipeg minting facilities, the 1 oz 2016 Gold Maple Leaf features the attention to detail and superior quality that we have come to expect from RCM products. In addition, the coin itself features a purity of .9999, which is just a bit purer than most other gold coins on the market today.
With the turn of the New Year fast-approaching, these beautiful 1 oz gold coins will soon be available for pre-order. Until then, we encourage you to check out our extensive collection of Canadian Gold Maple Leafs from previous years.
