The British Britannia coin is a popular bullion program from the Royal Mint that features an image 2,000 years in the making of British culture. Britannia was originally a term used by the Greeks and Romans to define the island of Britannia. Over the centuries, it has been used to define Britons and even name a goddess believed to protect the island from invaders. The 2016 1 oz British Silver Britannia is now available with a gilded finish courtesy of JM Bullion.

British Silver Britannia coins debuted in 1997, a full decade after the introduction of the coin’s gold version. These coins have had an interesting mintage history, with the coins produced using .958 millesimal fineness from 1997 to 2012.
Each coin in this JM Bullion product listing is a Brilliant Uncirculated specimen. Coins with a BU grade have no signs of wear and tear, but do feature breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks.
Gilded coins feature a brilliant contrast between silver and gold. These are traditional British Silver Britannia coins, but feature a 24-karat gold layer on the Britannia design on the coin’s reverse face. No gilded finish is added to Her Majesty’s portrait on the obverse.
The obverse face of the coin bears the all-new right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II of England. Designed in 2015 by Jody Clark, this new portrait shows the Queen as she appears at this stage of her reign. Clark, just 33 years old, is the youngest artist to design the Queen’s profile portrait for a British coin, and it replaces the 1998 design from Ian Rank-Broadley.
All British Silver Britannia coins are struck by the Royal Mint. Founded in 886 in London, today it is responsible for the production of currency for all members of the United Kingdom.
