English heraldry represents the coat of arms for the nation, and all of the heraldic images of Britain share designs originally used in Greek and Roman pottery. The first Royal Coat of Arms in England was created by Henry II in 1154, and the idea gained further popularity among the knights of the first and second crusades as part of the concept of chivalry.
In the exciting new Queen’s Beasts collection from the Royal Mint, The Lion coin is the first release in a planned 10-coin series. Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the British throne in 1952 following the death of her father, and a total of 10 beasts were represented in sculptures at her coronation in 1953.
The first of those 6-foot tall statues was that of a lion, the official heraldic animal of the Royal Family and the first to feature in this series. Each 2016 1 oz British Gold Queen’s Beast Coin in this release has a design from Jody Clark, the youngest Royal Mint artist to recreate the Queen’s right-profile portrait.
Each 2016 1 oz British Gold Queen’s Beast Coin in this product listing has a near-perfect Mint State 69 grade from the NGC. Coins in this condition exhibit their full, original mint luster, but also feature a maximum of two minor detracting flaws such as miniscule hairlines or contact marks.
On the obverse of each Gold Queen’s Beast coin you’ll find the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the latest release of Her Majesty’s portrait, and is new as of 2016. Created by 33-year-old Jody Clark, this depicts the Queen at her current age for use on commonwealth coins.
The reverse of all 2016 1 oz British Gold Queen’s Beast Coins has an image of the royal lion, complete with a crown atop its head and the heraldic shield of Britain in front of it. Engravings identify the weight, purity, and metal content of the coin, along with its year of issue.
