On the reverse side of the coin is the latest Lunar Series II design from the Perth Mint. For the Year of the Monkey, the image of two monkeys sitting in a peach tree was chosen for the design. This interpretation is meant to symbolize both immortality and longevity.
The obverse side of all Lunar Series II coins features the 1998 right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. Though the Royal Mint unveiled a new fifth-generation depiction of the Queen in 2015, the Perth Mint opted to continue the use of Rank-Broadley’s design for consistency in the obverse appearance of all Lunar Series II coins.
The Perth Mint was founded in Australia in 1898 as the third and final facility in the Royal Mint system under British Rule. In 1970 control of the mint passed to the state government of Western Australia.
