Lunar Series II coins were first introduced in 2008 as the popular successor to the Lunar Series I program. Featuring brand-new designs and a greater variety of strikings, Lunar Series II coins have proven immensely popular.
In keeping with the diversity of other coins in the Lunar Series II program, the Perth Mint has released a special 2016 Year of the Monkey coin with an Australian Opal in the design. The Year of the Monkey design on the reverse differs from the standard silver Year of the Monkey design, and is set against a backdrop that features a brightly colored opal.
On the reverse face of the coin you’ll find the opal inset into the center of the coin. Inside the opal is left-profile image of a monkey, with a peach hanging behind the creature. Around the outside rim is the .999 pure silver, which features a collection of peach blossoms. The inclusion of a monkey and peach in the depiction is consistent with the gold and silver versions of the 2016 coin, and represents longevity and immortality.
The obverse face of the coin bears the image of Queen Elizabeth II, surrounded by engravings that read “Elizabeth II,” “Australia,” and “1 Dollar.”
Australia’s Perth Mint is not affiliated with the federal government’s Royal Australian Mint, but rather, is a state-owned entity of Western Australia. All of its coins are considered legal tneder under the Currency Act of 1965.
