The nation’s official platinum bullion coin is the American Platinum Eagle, part of the larger American Eagle series of coins from the United States Mint. Released in 1997, the coins were regularly produced through 2008, but have been beset by platinum shortages in recent years. The 2016 1 oz American Platinum Eagle Coins marks the return of this beloved coin, and is available in near-perfect condition from JM Bullion.

American Platinum Eagle coins are unique from the United States Mint in that it is the only bullion coin program that has alternating images used on the reverse side of the coins. On an annual basis, the proof version of the coin has a new reverse design that focuses on a variety of topics that change with different programs.
These 2016 1 oz American Platinum Eagle coins are bullion specimens, and as such have the same obverse and reverse designs they’ve had since introduction in 1997. US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti (1986-2010) created the obverse design, while US Mint Engraver and Artist Thomas D. Rogers created the reverse.
Rogers’ reverse design is unique in the entirety of the American Platinum Eagle series because it is the only design to have featured on the reverse of both the bullion and proof coins in the same year. When it was released in 1997, this image was used as the first proof design and bullion image.
The obverse of the 2016 1 oz American Platinum Eagle features Mercanti’s Statue of Liberty design. Focusing on her face as she gazes into the distance, this is the second image Mercanti created for American Eagle coins, having created the heraldic eagle on the reverse of American Silver Eagle coins.
On the reverse is the design that features an American bald eagle as it flies over the sun. Engravings include the face value, year of issue, and nation of issue for the coin.
Each 2016 1 oz American Platinum Eagle listed here has a grade of Mint State 69. Coins of this type have full, original mint luster and feature a maximum of two minor detracting flaws found outside the primary focal areas. They are also part of the First Strike batch of coins.
