- Design originally created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt hand-picked Augustus Saint-Gaudens to complete the first redesign of American gold coins since the 1800s. The latest designs from the US Mint were created in 1895, while most of the nation’s currency at this time had images created by Christian Gobrecht in the middle of the 19th century.
Saint-Gaudens created a stunning image of Lady Liberty, cloaked in her robe with her hair flowing free behind her as she marched confidently forward. In the design, the national capital of Washington DC was visible at her feet as she held her torch aloft as a guiding light for the nation.
Each 2016 1 oz American Gold Eagle offered today by JM Bullion is a perfect specimen according to the PCGS. Coins in this condition exhibit their full, original mint luster and bear no detracting flaws of any kind.
On the obverse of each coin is that brilliant image of Saint-Gaudens. Lady Liberty has been updated for use on this coin, with the original 48 star surrounding her increased to 50 to reflect the addition of Hawaii and Alaska to the Union.
The reverse features a design from artist and sculptor Miley Busiek. She was commissioned in 1985 to complete a design that would be specifically used on the American Gold Eagle. Her image includes a family of nesting bald eagles.
