The American Gold Buffalo was introduced by the United States Mint for the first time in 2006, making these 2016 coins part of the 10th anniversary celebration of the Gold Buffalo program. The coins are available today in a one ounce bullion product and a one ounce proof product, though fractional-weight proofs were struck one time in 2008.
James Earle Fraser’s classic Buffalo Nickel design was chosen for the imagery on the American Gold Buffalo. Fraser created the image of a Native American chieftain and a North American bison for use on the nation’s five-cent piece in 1913, and his Buffalo Nickel was in circulation through 1938.
On the obverse face of the American Gold Buffalo is Fraser’s Native American chieftain, comprised of the facial features of three real-life tribal leaders alive in the early 20th century. His bison design used on the reverse was inspired by Black Diamond, a resident bison in the Central Park Zoo of New York City in the same time period.
