Australian Gold Koala coins are part of the larger Australian Koala series, which launched in 2008 with silver and gold options. There is often a great deal of change in the annual production of these coins, with fractional weights offered typically in gold only and larger weights above 1 oz. reserved for silver coin production.
When it comes to the collector’s Proof Australian Gold Koala, it is again the gold coin that often has the most variety. The stalwarts of the Gold Koala series are the 1 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold proofs. Each year, regardless of weight or metal, there is a new design added to the reverse that highlights the koala in its native habitat.
On the reverse of each 2016 1/4 oz Proof Australian Gold Koala coin you’ll find the image of a koala as it walks along the branches of a tree, its long claws and fingers gripping the branch tightly as it goes. Often mistakenly referred to as a Koala Bear, the animal is actually a marsupial, and one of three major marsupial species in Australia.
The obverse side of each Australian Gold Koala features Queen Elizabeth II’s right-profile portrait. Her Majesty appears on the obverse of all British and commonwealth coinage, with her portrait regularly updated throughout her reign to reflect her age. This depiction is from 1998 and represents the fourth such image used on Australian coins.
