On the Chinese Lunar Calendar, 2016 is the Year of the Monkey. The Perth Mint has produced a new lunar series coin each year for more than 20 years now, dating back to its first Lunar Series I coin in 1996. Now producing Lunar Series II coins, the Perth Mint has gotten creative by adding color to silver and bullion coins with limited availability. Right now, the 2016 ¼ oz Proof Colorized Australian Gold Monkey Coin is available through JM Bullion.

The Perth Mint’s Lunar Series II coins have generated intense demand around the globe, but the proof colorized version of these coins might capture the imagination like no other. Each 2016 ¼ oz. Proof Colorized Australian Gold Monkey coin features natural hues added to the monkey design on the reverse to bring the image to life.
These coins are struck as part of the Year of the Monkey series, with an extremely limited number of coins made available with colorized finishes. The Perth Mint will only mint a maximum of 5,000 coins, so there’s no time to waste in grabbing one of these coveted coins.
On the reverse face is the unique Year of the Monkey design, which is different than that featured on the silver counterpart. The Chinese symbol for monkey and the phrase “Year of the Monkey” are included on this side of the coin, along with the Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark.
The obverse face features the fourth-generation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Although an updated version is already in use by Britain’s Royal Mint, the Perth Mint has opted to stay with Ian Rank-Broadley’s 1998 image to lend continuity to the obverse of all Lunar Series II coins.
