One of the shortest lived coin designs in American history was the Standing Liberty Quarter. Though Hermon Atkins MacNeil’s Standing Liberty design is remembered to this day for its beauty, it only graced the nation’s 25-cent piece for 16 years. Part of the US Mint’s 2016 American Gold Centennial Series, the 2016 ¼ oz American Gold Standing Liberty Quarter Coin is now available as a perfect specimen from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The United States Mint is celebrating the 100th anniversary of three iconic coin designs in 2016. The American Gold Centennial Series features three designs from the American dime, quarter, and half dollar coins, all of which appeared for the first time in 1916.
All three designs replaced currency images from Charles E. Barber, the US Mint Chief Engraver who created all three in 1892. Adolph A. Weinman was responsible for the dime and half dollar, while the Standing Liberty Quarter design came from Hermon Atkins MacNeil. Each commemorative 2016 American Gold Centennial coin includes 24-karat gold and has a weight reflective of its original size.
Each 2016 ¼ oz American Gold Standing Liberty Quarter Coin in this listing earned an MS70 grade from the PCGS. These perfect specimens feature full, original luster from the mint and lack all detracting flaws. The First Strike designation is reserved for coins received by the PCGS for grading within the first 30 days of the US Mint’s release date.
On the obverse you’ll find the refined image of the original Standing Liberty Quarter. Lady Liberty guards the gap in a wall, symbolic of the nation’s readiness to defend itself. The reverse includes the image of an American bald eagle in flight. The original Standing Liberty Quarter was in circulation from 1916 to 1930, at which point quarters were halted for 1931, and returned in 1932 with the current left-profile portrait of President George Washington.
