Mexican Silver Libertad coins feature an image of Winged Victory on the obverse. Although depicted based upon the Mexican Independence Victory Column erected in 1920, her image came about during the war of independence with Spain in the 1820s. The wreath she holds in her right hand reflects self-government, while the broken chains in her left signify freedom from Spanish rule.
The background features two volcanic peaks. These aren’t just any two volcanic peaks though as they represent a story from Aztec culture. Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl were ancient lovers, with one a warrior and the other his love. She is said to have died from heartbreak after being led to believe he had died in battle. The two peaks represent their bodies lying together in death.
On the obverse of the 2016 ½ oz Proof Mexican Silver Libertad features Winged Victory in the foreground, with Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl in the background. Engravings of the coin’s weight, metal content, year of issue, purity, and a Mexican Mint mark are featured on this side.
The reverse of each 2016 Proof Mexican Silver Libertad includes the coat of arms for Mexico. On the larger weight coins you’ll find the modern coat of arms along with all 10 historic versions. These ½ oz coins, along with all other fractional weights, include only the modern caot of arms.
The Mexcian Mint is the oldest operating facility in the Western Hemisphere. Originally opened in 1535, it once struck coins for all Spanish territories and colonies in the Western world. Today is the nation’s official sovereign mint.
