Mexican Silver Libertad coins feature historic imagery that is relevant the nation’s ancient past and symbolic of its struggle for freedom from Spanish rule in the 19th century. The twin volcanic peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl are visible in the background of the obverse, and bear the names of ancient Aztec lovers. Legend says Iztaccihuatl died of grief believing that Popocatepetl had died in battle, when in reality he was still alive.
On the obverse face of each coin you’ll find these volcanic peaks in the background, with the foreground dominated by the image of Winged Victory. Her angelic statue is symbolic of the nation’s success in its war of independence with Spain, which started in 1821. Today a statue stands in her honor in the center of Mexico City, where it was erected in 1921 on the centennial of the war’s opening.
The reverse side of the 2016 ½ oz Mexican Silver Libertad is the image of the coat of arms for Mexico. While the full-weight coins in the series feature historic versions surrounding this design, the fractional-weight coins are too small to include the 10 historic designs of the coat of arms.
Each of these 2016 ½ oz Mexican Silver Libertads is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Coins with a BU grade show no signs of wear and tear, though they may feature minor flaws such as breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks.
All Mexican Silver Libertads are produced by the Mexican Mint. Originally founded in 1535 by Spanish conquistadors, today it is controlled by the Banco de Mexico and the nation’s federal government.
