Australian Gold Monkey coins are part of a broader Lunar Series II program that runs on a 12-year production cycle. The coins trace their roots to the original Lunar Series program, offered by the Perth Mint from 1996 to 2007. Those coins were so popular that the mint acted to provide a Lunar Series II that restarted in 2008, and featured all-new reverse designs.
The Australian Gold Monkey is available in a total of six weights and two versions: proof and bullion. The coins in this product listing are bullion products with a Brilliant Uncirculated condition. This indicates that each coin has no signs of wear and tear, but may feature breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks.
On the reverse of the Year of the Monkey gold coin from the Perth Mint is Ing Ing Jong’s image of a monkey. In her depiction, one monkey is featured sitting in a peach tree. Resting on its hind legs with a curled tail, its head is turned backward looking at a peach hanging from an overhead branch.
The obverse features the fourth-generation profile of Queen Elizabeth II. Designed in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley, this image has been replaced on Royal Mint products, but remains in use by the Perth Mint to give continuity across its Lunar Series II coins.
Perth Mint was founded in 1898 as the final of three mint facilities by the British Royal Mint. Following the closure of the Sydney Mint and Melbourne Mint, the Perth Mint remains standing as the longest operating facility in Australia.

“Very nice coin. Our first 1/2 ounce gold piece. Wow, too a while to save up for it, but it is nice. My wife asked “why a monkey?”. The reason it is not a 5, I have no other to compete it.”
