Tigers are the world’s largest cat species, and can be found in many different subspecies across the continent of Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and parts of Russia. A full-grown tiger can weigh upwards of 300 pounds.
Each of these 2016 ½ oz Australian Cub Series Tiger Cub coins is struck by the Perth Mint as a proof specimen, with sharper edges and highly detailed design features. These coins also have a colorized finish on the reverse, bringing the tigers and their surroundings to life.
On the reverse face of the coin you’ll find the image of two cuddly tiger cubs at play, with one laying on its back as the other one jumps over it. The only engraving on this face of the coin is the “P” mint mark of the Perth Mint.
The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s 1998 depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. Captured in right-profile relief, Her Majesty’s image is surrounded by multiple engravings that include her name, the coin’s face value, nation of issue, year of issue, weight, purity, and metal content.
Australia’s Perth Mint was founded in 1898 as the third and final installation in the British Royal Mint system on the continent. Today it is an independent facility owned by the state of Western Australia, and operates outside the Royal Australian Mint system. These particular proof coins ship in brightly colored presentation boxes, and arrive in a Perth Mint display case within. A numbered Certificate of Authenticity is included as well.
