There are few designs from American coinage history with the reputation of Walking Liberty. Adolph A. Weinman’s design of Liberty walking toward the setting sun won a three-way contest to replace the design on the half dollar in 1916, which originated from United States Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber in 1892.
Weinman was so successful in his coin designs in 1916 that his design for the dime also won out, giving him credit for both the iconic Mercury Dime and Walking Liberty Half Dollar. The latter coin, celebrated now on the 2016 ½ oz American Gold Walking Liberty Half-Dollar Coin, was in circulation from 1916 to 1947.
The obverse face of the 2016 ½ oz American Gold Walking Liberty Half-Dollar coin features the original Walking Liberty design from Weinman, modernized and refined for appearance on this stunning 24-karat gold coin. The only addition to the original engravings is that of Weinman’s initials, as “AW.”
On the reverse you’ll find the American bald eagle design that Weinman created for the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. His depiction features the bald eagle perched on a branch jutting out from a cliff edge, its wings prepared to lift it off into flight. Additional engravings to this design identify the gold coin’s content, purity, and weight.
Each 2016 ½ oz American Gold Walking Liberty Half-Dollar Coin available to you today is a near-perfect coin with a Specimen 69 grade from the PCGS. These coins exhibit full, original mint luster and include a maximum of two minor detracting flaws on the surface. First Strike coins must arrive at the PCGS for grading within the first 30 days of the release date set by the US Mint in order to earn this designation.
