American Gold Eagle coins were introduced in 1986 along with the silver version of the coin. Originally available only in bullion and proof versions, the American Eagle’s gold variant is the most diverse in the program. American Gold Eagle coins are produced in 1 oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz weights in addition to these ½ oz coins. All four weights were introduced only in the gold bullion version at first, with gradual introduction for the proof version.
On the obverse face is Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ image of Lady Liberty. Crafted in 1907 and used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933, Saint-Gaudens was unable to see his vision come to life, having passed away due to complications from an illness just months before the US Mint completed striking of the coins.
The reverse features the design of a male bald eagle returning to the family nest, which includes a group of hatchlings under the cautious eye of a female bald eagle. The coin’s weight, purity, metal content, and face value are also engraved on this side.
